I'm not sure about your why (but I want to know so please post to comments) but I know mine.
Why I do this? I train because I love it. I love the feeling I get from doing something really hard. I love the physical feeling I get during the activity. I love the mental focus I get when I eat real food and I love knowing I can eat really bad food and burn it off in an instant. I love knowing I can control my health by eating and doing things I like. I love the clarity of purpose and independence it gives my life. Moving better, bolder, more freely, stronger, quicker, balanced, and pain free improves you physically, mentally and emotionally. Helping people do that makes my day/week/month/year. I love the feeling I get when someone accomplished something really great to them (gold medal, pull up, 3 classes in a week, see their shoes). I train personally and professionally for the same reasons, to help myself and friends get more out of their life. I employ CrossFit methods because I have found it yields the best results in the least amount of time and I really like the group of people that are willing to do the same.
If it's important do it everyday - Dan Gable
Your fitness is important. It is important to you physically, mentally and emotionally. Your attitude, relationships, career and health will dramatically improve alongside your fitness. So do something everyday to build and maintain it but first figure out why.
Great post, Mitch. These are the ideas that I, and I think everyone, needs to hear. Bottom line, its impossible for most of us to have the kind of life we say we want without investing valuable time into our own fitness.
ReplyDeleteI think the main barrier to my consistency in working out is the inconsistency of my why's. I buzz around thinking about and doing so many things that habits core to my own well-being (exercise, eating well, sleep) take a back seat to what "needs" to get done. The result, of course, is that I'm not coming from a solid, foundational fitness that could provide consistent energy and focus to de all those "need to" things better.
So, my why? I want to make crossfit a consistent part of my days because
1. I want to be able to move, play, and do what I want whenever I want without the risk of getting hurt or throwing up because I'm so out of shape...freedom.
2. I want to add some consistency to my schedule that includes investing in my own fitness. I sleep better and feel better when I do.
3. I want to never hurt my back again.
4. I want to be able to leave with friends at any given moment...able to go 20 miles with a loaded pack, run five miles on trails at a 7.5 min/mile pace, put in 50 miles on my bike, or give it all I've got in a fight (God forbid) for 15 minutes if I have to. I've done all of these before(ok...the fights didn't last that long), but lately I'd settle for the ability to do any one of them.
5. I want to regain my fitness and build a lifestyle that will support it, and the results that come with it for the rest of my life.

I do it because with every rep/set/every drop of sweat and even the occasional vomit I know that I just put everything I had into my workout and when I leave the gym i leave my heart there on the floor...and when I walk out tired and sore and drenched all I seem to think about the next 24 hours is how i cant wait to get back and do it all over....because no matter how rough your day was or how stressed you are you know that you can get through it cause you just went through Hell at FIT CLUB and you walked out of the fire better, stronger, faster and more importantly mentaly tougher....thats why i do it
ReplyDeleteI do it because i want to be someone i haven't been in my past, someone who my family can look up to and show them what being healthy and fit can do for your life. I want to wake up in the morning and feel good when i look in the mirror, i wanna keep up with the kids and i wanna live a healthy life...with that said something is blocking me...i guess not really something but someone...myself. you are your own worst enemy which i have proven to be true over and over, but i will not give up, i will reach my goal no matter what it takes, I'm not going to try anymore...i will do it. ofc and everyone apart of this club has helped me to better myself and have done great things for me physically and mentally, so i will show my gratitude by kicking it up ten notches and working hard for myself and the instructors as they do for me every time i come. They do not half ass anything or call off when they don't feel like working hard, they come ready to work u every time, i feel that's what they should receive back from me...just what they put in. Thank u...2 everyone who has helped me at the fit club.
ReplyDeleteI do it for several reason! First the great stress reliever that a great workout can provide. Second you only have one body might as well treat it well in order to be able to move when your older. Third everyone needs to have goals they want to achieve no matter what stage they are in their life! This is mine right now along with others I personally have.
ReplyDeleteMy reason is to loose the weight that I gained in my 20's due to lots of nights pounding beers and over eating. I also have a passion for mountain biking and want to be able to take my skills farther. I want to be able to get more air, speed up hill and be fit and conditioned enough to not get injured when I fall. The other reason is for my wife. I don't want our lives to be limited by my weight and I want to look good for her.
ReplyDeleteBottom line..I don't want to grow up,and Fit Club keeps me feeling young. After a workout I have a sharper mind and body.
I work out b/c I enjoy it and athletics have always been a part of my life. I choose Fit Club specifically b/c I enjoy being around a constantly growing community of people that challenges me to work way harder than i would on my own. And I choose the 6am classes b/c they help prepare me for the day mentally and physically, and it leaves no room for all the numerous excuses that inevitably pop up throughout the day and sabotage my workout schedule.
