Some tips for new year. #1 get started!

As 2009 comes to a close and 2010 begins one of the most common new years resolutions is to get in shape, lose weight etc. Over the past 16 years in the fitness industry I have seen a lot of different strategies toward this goal. What will follow in the next few weeks are some myths and realities about health and fitness along with tips on what works and what doesn't.

Myth #1
I'll join a gym and that will motivate me to get in shape.

Reality
Most people are motivated by a meaningful goal along with consistent reinforcement of the actions required to obtain that goal. These aren't really part of the typical gym experience. A good trainer/coach and a fun group of people are far more supportive toward achieving your goals than a shiny new Globo Gym or some new piece of equipment that will likely become a clothes hanger. The fitness consultant/sales person/front desk jockey wont tell you this but the fitness club industry is based on the idea that if 100 people buy a membership only about 20 will use it after the first 30 days. Of the remaining 80 most will continue to pay (because they are contractually obligated or intend on going tomorrow or the next day or when insert excuse here is over. This is why the club is willing to offer such low rates, they know you'll pay for far more than you'll take. Try and get them to guarantee results in writing, they wont and can't because doing so would cost them too much. They would have to hire and train more qualified staff, spend less money on shiny new toys (that are more about selling memberships than getting fit) and they would have to raise the rate.

Tip #1
Nothing has ever been accomplished with intentions. Results require action. Take it! Don't wait for insert excuse here. Your body and mind are built to be most productive when you are moving regularly. Before you spend money on a membership find someone (preferably a professional, mmm I think I know a few) that can help you set some goals, create a strategy to accomplish them and take some accountability for your success. Next find an environment that is supportive of your goals (mmm I think I know of such a place) and go there as often as possible.

If your looking for some help FIT CLUB is building a community of people committed to getting into the best shape of their lives and having a blast in the process.
